After a whole summer of renovations the Program Center in Rock Island, Illinois is nearly ready for your visit! The former leadership center, located one block away from the Mississippi River, has been redesigned as a space just for girls- for events, series, outreach activities, overnights and more!
There are many updates and new features to the building based on suggestions by girls and adults from throughout the council. What was formerly a parking lot is now green space surrounded by a white fence, a great outdoor space for games like Gaga Dodgeball, a favorite among girls who visit our camp properties.
One great girl suggestion that has become a reality is a slide, from the second floor down to the first! It’s not quite done yet- but you can get a good idea of what it will look like here.
The first floor will offer a large open activity area, an art room, a computer class room, and a general classroom. There will also be two small bunk rooms, each with four beds.
The second floor contains an open lounge area, a classroom and a dual kitchen with eating area. Here’s the kitchen!
The facility also has a third floor open air observation deck called the “Eagle’s Nest” providing a view of the city of Rock Island, the Mississippi River and local wildlife.
We are excited to enter the last phase of the renovations and have been preparing for troops and groups to visit the center!
A huge thank you goes to the local volunteers who are helping with many aspects of this project, including the reservation process, developing programs and assisting with preparing the program center website. This group will also act as hosts for the Program Center and will help check in troops and groups when they arrive to ensure they have everything they need for a great experience. If you live in the Quad Cities area and are interested in helping with this volunteer group please e-mail me at AngelaV@GirlScoutstoday.org.
We plan to begin booking day, half day and overnight reservations for Girl Scout groups very soon! I’ll be posted again once we have the reservation form (and more pictures available)!
That’s all for this week with Angela Ventris. Check back next week for more excited news and adventures in outdoor program!
