In Girl Scouting, we prepare girls to lead now and throughout their lives by giving them the tools necessary to become leaders and change their world. Ensuring that girls are able to live a healthy lifestyle is fundamental to achieving the Girl Scout mission. Girls cannot grow into productive, engaged citizens in their communities if they are not living healthy lives.
We have partnered with Iowa Health Systems to promote healthy living to eastern Iowa and western Illinois Girl Scouts. We are excited about the opportunity to educate and inspire girls to be their best. These events include hands on activities such as:
- mixing up yummy, healthy snacks
- building mini-first aid kits to take home
- dressing up in scrubs and testing out medical equipment like stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs
- completing activities from the American Heart Association Go Red patch
- discovering alternative ways to be active
Every girl will also take home a bag full of goodies including a jump rope, UV ray dog tag, a mini-first aid kit and other tools to support a happy, healthy lifestyle all year long.
Super Girls is a one day event benefiting girls in grades K-5. It is the goal of this program for girls to leave with a better understanding of the importance of the cornerstones to good health: nutrition, fitness, positive self-esteem, and solid decision-making skills.
The Super Girl event in Muscatine, which was held on January 5th showed us how much girls enjoy learning about health. One Kindergarten participant really enjoyed the black light activity; she put her hands under the black light, all of the germy areas of her hands glowed.
“It’s amazing to see how well you need to scrub your fingers to get all of the germs off!” said her leader. She thought the temporary tattoos of little germ creatures were pretty cool too.
Super Girl events will be held in other areas too!
